Job Description
The Chemist is responsible for performing analytical testing and chemical analysis of materials, ensuring accuracy, reliability, and compliance with applicable standards (e.g., ISO/IEC 17025) and regulatory requirements. This role supports the laboratory’s daily operations by conducting tests, preparing samples, maintaining equipment, and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives. The Chemist ensures that test results meet client specifications and helps uphold the laboratory’s accreditation and reputation for high-quality service.

1. Sample Preparation and Testing
Receive, register, and prepare samples for analysis according to laboratory procedures.
Perform chemical and physical analyses on materials such as soils, aggregates, water, cement, and concrete using approved standards (ASTM, BS, ISO, etc.).
Operate and maintain laboratory instruments such as spectrophotometers, pH meters, and other analytical equipment.
Record, interpret, and validate test results to ensure accuracy and precision.
2. Quality Assurance and Compliance
Follow laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), safety protocols, and quality system requirements (ISO/IEC 17025).
Participate in proficiency testing (PT) and inter-laboratory comparisons (ILC) as required for accreditation.
Assist in implementing corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) for non-conformities.
3. Equipment Maintenance and Calibration
Perform routine calibration and maintenance of laboratory equipment to ensure reliable test results.
Report equipment malfunctions or deviations immediately, and assist in troubleshooting.
Maintain detailed records of equipment maintenance, calibration, and performance checks.
4. Data Management and Reporting
Accurately document all test data, observations, and deviations in laboratory records and LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System).
Prepare and review test reports for submission to clients and management.
Support the Laboratory Manager in preparing quality and performance reports.
5. Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) Compliance
Adhere to all laboratory safety protocols, including proper use of PPE and safe chemical handling.
Maintain a clean and organized laboratory environment to reduce contamination or accident risks.
Participate in laboratory risk assessments and contribute to HSE initiatives.
6. Continuous Improvement and Training
Suggest improvements to laboratory methods, workflows, and quality processes.
Stay up to date with advancements in analytical techniques, standards, and regulatory updates.
Assist in training and mentoring new laboratory staff or interns as needed.
Qualifications and Experience:
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Applied Chemistry, or a related scientific discipline (required).
Experience:
Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience in materials testing, chemical analysis, or a related field.
